I am writing my informative paper on the danger, and additions of sugar. I am still hung up on this.
One paragraph is, Have you ever considered glucose and fructose in the same content with ethanol, or ethyl alcohol and the effect of them on our bodies? Ethanol is a toxin that affects the acute nervous system and is a chronic hepatoxin and it must be processed completely by the liver. After consuming an alcoholic drink 10% gets broken down by the stomach and intestine and 10% is metabolized by the brain and other organs. The remaining 80% then goes to the liver where it must be broken down. But when you come to fructose 100% of it goes to the liver to be processed. So when you compare the metabolism of 150 calories in a soda to 150 in a beer (12 oz can each) about 90 calories reach the liver in either case. This concludes that fructose causes most of the same toxic affects as alcohol because they both come from sugar fermentation.
This being said its a scary thought when we really think about and consider the damages that we unknowingly cause our bodies. I am one who is addicted to diet coke and this paper has caused me a great deal of alarm and consideration.
Its something we all could look into and consider regarding our health.

How did you ever come up with that idea for a subject? I have never heard of that before. Great subject, almost sounds like a soda full of sugar can be almost as damaging as an alcoholic beverage. I hope your paper turns out really good and I'll be interested in reading your next post so I can learn more.
ReplyDeleteI know sugar was bad but wow! I had not done the research into the details of it. Many Americans, like, myself, know that certain foods are bad for us but we do not take the time to do the research for ourselves. I also would like to know how you were able to come up with this as your research topic. Is this something that you have been battling or are you studying nutrition? I would love to read the final product too!
ReplyDeleteJason, Jeniese, looking through Time magazine when I found this article and I was shocked. So I thought this would be a good research paper and it is turning out to be just that. Jeniese, I have also been diagnosed with fibromayalgia and I drink sadly enough, 5-7 diet cokes a day and am trying hard to quit. I didn't realize that your body gets just as addicted as to smoking or drinking alcohol Thanks for the comments
ReplyDeleteVicki,
ReplyDeleteThis is a really interesting topic! I have always known that sugar wasn't healthy, but I had no idea about the dangers and details of how unhealthy it is. Even though I am aware that some foods are bad for my health, I still eat them. Most of Americans are the same way. Maybe if we knew more of the negative consequences, we would be more careful!
